Senior living communities are plentiful across the country, but there are only a handful of senior communities specifically designed for retired (or senior) gays and lesbians. Recently, there has been a new interest in gay and lesbian retirement, and several communities have emerged across the country.
Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing of Los Angeles (LGBT Low Income Senior Community)
Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing of L.A. is an organization whose goal is to provide affordable housing communities for LGBT senior citizens. Triangle Square is the organization’s first senior living community, and it is a beautiful, brand new, modern facility located in Hollywood, California (Greater L.A.). Triangle Square is a tax credit property designed for low-income applicants who are lesbian and gay seniors, ages 62 and above. It is the first such property of its kind in the United States.
The Resort on Carefree Boulevard (Lesbian Retirement)
The Resort on Carefree Boulevard markets itself as “Southwest Florida’s Premier Lesbian Destination.” The resort is a senior living community, but people ages 40 and up are welcome. The Resort at Carefree Blvd. is a women’s community that offers upscale mobile homes in Naples, Florida starting from $145,000. There are also rental opportunities associated with the resort, and a beautiful brand new location located in North Carolina.
Rainbow Vista (LGBT Active Senior Community)
Rainbow Vista is located in Portland, Oregon, and it touts itself as an active LGBT senior residence that offers a true “community” experience. There is a community garden, theater, library, exercise room, music room, billiard and recreation room, and a social hall. Rainbow Vista is an apartment community with affordable rates, and they offer studios, one, and double studio units with all utilities included. They also offer short term, and guest apartments for out of town gay and lesbian visitors to the Portland area (This would be a nice family oriented place to stay if you are visiting for Portland Pride).
Fountaingrove Lodge (Luxury Gay and Lesbian Retirement Community)
Fountaingrove Lodge is the first gay and lesbian senior community in the country to offer five-star resort-like living features, and senior personal care options. The upscale retirement community sits on ten acres, with golf course, oak grove, and mountain views. Fountaingrove is located in the heart of California wine country (Sonoma County) in Santa Rosa, and they offer apartments and bungalows starting from $350,000.
